In 1970, the Greater Victoria School Board held a plebiscite (a vote similar to a referendum) on the establishment of a regional college in Victoria.
On October 28, 1970, the B.C. Provincial Government changed gave authority for the establishment of “Juan de Fuca College.”
The name “Juan de Fuca” was soon changed to “Camosun College” when authorities realized the name didn’t lend itself well to things like headlines, college cheers or sweatshirts – as the school could be called “Fuca U!”
